BRAIN EXCERCISES

By Dr. Marion Somers, Ph. D., Ask Dr. Marion

QUESTION: How can I help my granddad stay more mentally active? He was a serious person at one time, but not so much anymore. Buddie in New Jersey

ANSWER: Buddie,

Our three pound command and control center must be exercised, no matter how old someone is. You can help your granddad become more mentally active and a bigger part of his world by encouraging him to do jigsaw puzzles, play word games, try a game of cards, read every day, go to a museum, taste new food, see a movie, and/or listen to new types of music. Anything that brings your granddad out of his regular pattern is recommended. The goal is to stretch his mind so it gets stronger, just like other muscles gain strength when they are exercised. This will almost certainly help him increase his intellectual curiosity, meet new people, and stay excited about life.
