COMFORT FOODS

By Dr. Marion Somers, Ph. D., Ask Dr. Marion

QUESTION: I only see my great grandmother two or three times a year. Is there an easy way I can make my visits more productive and less stressful, Doctor Marion? Abigail in New Jersey, 38

ANSWER: There sure is, Abigail. Why not tap into the power of comfort foods. Doing so can start a visit off on the right track since most people gravitate toward specific comfort foods. Whether it's an old family recipe that's been handed down through generations, or chicken soup if you're feeling low, or warm milk to help with a good night's sleep, there are many examples that bring good memories.

It's no different for your great grandmother, so take the time to find out about her comfort foods. Ask her for a variety of different comfort food options so you can change it up from time to time. Whether they are healthy dinners or tasty treats, comfort foods can also help in times of stress as long as they're not consumed in mass quantities. You also have the option of arriving with the delicious meals, or cooking them yourself so that your great grandmother's house is filled with glorious aromas and positive memories.
