Housing Assistance

Federal and state government agencies offer programs that provide various forms of housing assistance to low-income older adults. Programs are often administered by local housing agencies. For example, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) gives funds directly to apartment owners, who lower the rents they charge low-income tenants, including older adults.

The housing choice voucher program is HUD's major program for helping very low-income people afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market. Participants can choose any housing that meets the requirements of the program.
