Tips for Purchasing a Hearing Aid

Here are some suggestions for choosing and purchasing a hearing aid.

Visit your doctor. Get a checkup to make sure your hearing loss is not due to correctable causes. There could be earwax, an infection or a tumor that is causing the problem. Ask for a referral to an audiologist (hearing specialist).
Visit an audiologist for a checkup. This professional can help you find the hearing aid that will meet your needs best. Be wary of a free consultation or if the professional only carries one brand.
Request a trial period to make sure the device is useful. The cost of the trial should be credited towards the total cost of the hearing aid.
Make sure there is a warranty covering both parts and labor for a reasonable length of time.
Beware of false claims. A hearing aid cannot restore hearing loss and there is no way to completely get rid of background noise.
