Learning Demo - Caregiver Perspective

LightBridge

In this sample you will hear from Cindy, a real caregiver from Texas, who shares her personal story and one of the care strategies she and her family used to address her father's wandering. Wandering is a problem that is common among a majority of persons with Alzheimer's disease, although is more common in the middle to later stages of the disease. This presentation by a real caregiver demonstrates that the best approach to wandering is not to discourage it, but to manage the behavior by setting physical boundaries and being creative. As you will hear in this discussion, maintaining respect and dignity to persons who are wandering while maintaining their safety is a core principle of care. Some common approaches to wandering include:

  • Using activities as a distraction to wandering.
  • Providing space and environmental cues that discourage wandering in dangerous areas.
  • Engaging a person with dementia in dialogue about whom or what they are seeking.
  • Encouraging physical exercise and walking in safe and secure areas.
  • Look and listen for nonverbal cues that indicate unmet physical needs.
  • Report any changes in behavior to your doctor as some wandering behaviors may be a symptom of medical changes.
