GO TO WATER

By Dr. Marion Somers, Ph. D., Ask Dr. Marion

QUESTION: When I go to the park, I am always drawn to the garden fountain, and when I travel, I like to be near an ocean or a pool. I find my grandmother has this same need, so can you write a bit about this please, Doctor Marion? Lee from Tennessee

ANSWER: I'd be glad to, Lee. Without really knowing or understanding why, many people just like you gravitate to fountains, rivers, pools, lakes, and oceans. Why is this so? Being near water is very relaxing. It's my belief that the negative ions in the composition of water are good for the body. Water has a quieting element that we could all use more of in today's fast-paced environment.

Especially if you're a stressed-out caregiver, find a body of water, either by yourself or with a companion. The rhythms and sounds of water relieve tension and anxiety. Don't feel funny about being drawn to water. Finding various ways to relax and calm the soul and quiet the mind is important for the health and well-being of caregivers everywhere.
